This hidden gem along the Newfoundland coastline is a must-see for history buffs and those who appreciate the beauty of nature. The three whaling ships, scattered just off the shore of Conception Harbour, offer a poignant glimpse into the province's maritime past.

The S.S. Charcot, the most prominent of the three, ran aground during a storm in 1968. The fate of the other two, the S.S. Southern Foam and the S.S. Sukha, is a bit more uncertain. They were either scuttled or broke their moorings and sank around the same time.

While the exact details of their final moments remain shrouded in mystery, these shipwrecks continue to fascinate and intrigue visitors. The S.S. Sukha, in particular, has garnered recent attention due to the ongoing efforts to remove the oil that remains trapped within its hull. This environmental cleanup project is a testament to the ongoing commitment to preserving our natural heritage.

If you're looking for a unique and thought-provoking experience, I highly recommend visiting these whaling shipwrecks. The combination of history, nature, and the ongoing conservation efforts make this a truly special destination.

We did a detour on our way back to St John's here. The harbour views were astonishing.

A cool spot to visit for a photo. Not convinced about the other two ships being there as the water is very shallow and the ship that's visible is very close to the shore. Watch your footing as the rock beach is slippery. We visited at sunset and got some great lighting.

The shipwreck is easily accessible for photographers. You can get very close to the ship at low tide. Conception Harbour is an easy drive from the St. John’s area and there is many picturesque villages in the area.

Really cool site. I definitely would swing by if you were within a 15-minute drive. There is some parking right in front of it for east access.

Once you learn a bit of the history you discover that it's not so interesting. Currently the iron from these ships are Leachng into the surrounding waters and killing the Marine Life. The country responsible for the ships refuse to remove them. I don't know why... maybe the cost or maybe they don't care? If anyone has more info ..please share.
