After nearly 30 years of doing business with Mackenzie Gartside Mortgage Associates, I’m extremely disappointed with how far the customer service has declined. It feels less like a personalized brokerage and more like a mortgage farm — where you’re just another number in a queue.

I was shocked to discover that I could have locked in my variable-rate mortgage through Scotiabank, but this option was never clearly communicated to me by Mackenzie’s team. The lack of transparency and guidance cost me financially, and it was only through my own investigation that I found out what was available.

When I tried to get clarity, I was left on hold for over an hour just to find out what rates were being offered. That level of service is unacceptable — especially from a broker I’ve trusted for decades.

If you’re looking to refinance or need someone who will actually look out for your best interest, skip the broker and go directly to Scotiabank in Courtenay. Not only were their rates better than anything I was offered locally, but their advisors also took the time to explain everything clearly — empowering me to make decisions that would save me money over the term of my mortgage.

My advice: Don’t settle for being farmed through a process. Work with someone who values you as a customer.

Buying a house was by far the most stressful experience I've ever gone through, and if it weren't for Mackenzie and her team, I would probably have had a full nervous breakdown.
