I want to start by saying that I genuinely like Shawn as a person. He’s friendly, approachable, and easy to talk to. However, being nice doesn’t necessarily equate to being effective in a legal role — and unfortunately, I believe his handling of my case ended up costing my company approximately $90,000.

I approached Shawn for legal advice regarding a lot deposit dispute with developers in Carstairs, Alberta. I was trying to move away from what I felt was a shady situation and had one lot remaining that I hoped to sell. My concern was whether I could list the lot for sale without legal consequence, given the ongoing dispute.

Shawn asked for the contract, which I promptly provided. I specifically asked whether I could sell the lot, and he confirmed I could — seemingly after reading the section I had flagged. However, what he failed to advise me on was Clause 21 of the contract, which carried significant consequences if triggered. That clause later became the basis for the developers reclaiming the lot at 80% of its value — a lot I had paid for in full and legally owned.

When I questioned why this critical clause was never brought to my attention, Shawn admitted he had read it — but didn’t think the developers would “be such pricks,” to use his words. That response left me stunned. Whether he failed to read the full contract or read it and underestimated the risks, I was left unprotected and now face a major financial loss.

Even after offering a full build for a ready buyer at cost +10% to try to resolve the situation — which would have resulted in a $70,000 recovery and only a $20,000 loss — the opportunity slipped away due to how things were initially handled.

In the end, while I appreciate Shawn personally, I can no longer trust him professionally. Tailored Homes and Design Ltd. will not be using his services moving forward. I hope this review helps others make a more informed decision when choosing legal representation.

I’m the owner of Tailored Homes and Design Ltd., a small custom home building business. I came to Shawn seeking legal help with a lot deposit dispute involving developers in Carstairs, Alberta. I felt the development was shady and wanted to move on. I still owned one lot and hoped to sell it, but I was unsure if I legally could due to the risk of civil action from the developers.

I sent Shawn the contract and asked him directly if selling the lot was possible. He read the section I pointed out and confirmed I could sell. What he didn’t do was advise me about Clause 21 — a critical part of the contract that gave the developers the ability to buy back the lot at 80% of what I paid. As a result, the developers are now taking back a lot I fully own, and my company is facing an estimated $90,000 loss. We even offered to fix the situation with a full build for a qualified buyer at cost +10%, which would have reduced our loss to around $20,000 — but the damage was already done.

This situation has not only hurt my business, it’s put me in a place where I’m now being forced to consider finding a new job to support my family. That’s the real-world impact of poor legal advice.

I truly wish things had turned out differently, and again — I don’t have a personal issue with Shawn. But this was a professional failure, and one that cost me dearly. I can no longer continue using his services, and I hope this review helps others who are searching for a lawyer to ask the hard questions and make sure they’re fully protected.
