I took a group of youth to the Cree Cultural Centre and was so impressed by the program we experienced there, as well as honoured to be able to experience it! It was definitely a highlight of our entire Missinaibi trip. We were cooked an amazing meal of local game (moose and goose!), delicious bread dumplings and bannock. Unlike any meal I've had! We were taught beading and bracelet making from the staff who were so kind and welcoming to us, letting us camp on their property as well. A special shout out to Kim, Anne, Emmet and Michael who made our time there so special. I can't wait to visit again!!

I had a good experience with Kim Cheechoo who is the Tourism coordinator for the Moose Cree First Nation. For C$35, she picked me up from the Water Taxi docks and took me on a brief car tour of Moose Factory, including the Hudson Bay House, one of the oldest structures from the fur trade era. If you're coming from a large city, don't expect something on the order of the Smithsonian or Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum. The centre is just basically one giant room with some displays. Ask Kim and others questions about the history and practices of the Cree, what they eat, and about Moose Cree and Canadian syllabics. There is a Moose Cree to English dictionary for you to look at and study. She has her family tree there as well. There are some interesting pictures and examples of furs and hides. But don't expect some neat automated displays or movies that are in hugely funded museums down south. I would still recommend this place but come in with the right expectations. They don't have a huge amount of funding to create a huge sensory display. But pay the $35 and give them due respect.

The person manning the Centre did not know her own Cree history. She couldn't answer questions my wife asked to understand the distinctive characteristics of the Cree people or their relationship to other aboriginal peoples or tribes. She only seemed to know the political relationship between the Cree and Whites/European descent.

The displays were good, especially the furs.

If you find yourself in moose factory with nothing to Do, call these folks they are incredibly accommodating. They were kind enough to take me on a tour of the entire island including the cultural centre. She shared all kinds of personal experiences as a indigenous woman. She shared stories of their culture and what its like to live in Moose Factory. I was very appreciative of the time taken on a day off for a very fair price.

We took our BPSA Scout group here for cultural and nature experiences. We spent three days sleeping in both the teepee and long house. We assisted in the preparations of a roasted wild goose dinner prepared over open fire. We explored the island by foot and visited many of the island stores, landmarks and took a tour up the river to the mouth of the James Bay. If you go visit, be sure to say hello to Kim, Anne and Emmitt. Well worth the experience, don't rush!
