I have been without proof of insurance for about 7 weeks now.
My policy (with Gore Mutual) was set to renew on September 26 2023. Approximately 3 weeks in advance of that date, I started shopping for better rates. The best rate I was offered was with Belair Direct, as I expected. However, I have always been of the mindset that it is ok to pay a little extra, in the event that you may need service in the future, so I had Gallager also review and requote my policy. I do not know the exact date of my first call to Gallager. They did get me a rate that was comparable to Belaire Direct, and with available discounts and the ability to pay in full by credit card in advance, the Gallager quote (now moved to Dominion Insurance) was very good. I accepted the quote and waited for paperwork.
In the week before September 26, I called at least twice asking where my new paperwork was, what my new policy number was, asking for anything that verified my insurance was changed. I was, essentially, dismissed, until September 25 when I called in one last time, being more forceful and demanding of answers, as to my knowledge, my policy was void the following day. In the meantime, Gore Mutual had already taken their next paymnet out of my account. I was assured that would be refunded.
In what seemed like a liast minute rushed attempt to finish her homework, my broker Enya "reviewed" my information over the phone and emailed me a void slip with a BINDER policy number for Dominion.
Today is Tuesday October 24, I write this at 6:35 pm. I had called Gallager midday yesterday, telling them the following
1) I have no proof of insurance slips to date. To my knowledge, I am driving without coverage
2) Gore Mutual has taken a second payment on a policy that was supposed to be cancelled. My previous policy also covered my daughter, so I have paid over $550 for a policy that does not exsist.
I asked how long is it reasonable to wait to get a response. I was told end of business day today. They have not returned my call.
I do not know what my recourse is as a consumer other than this review. I debated calling a lawyer, but I can't cite what my damages are. Obviously, I will also be calling Vince Ippolito insurance to get proper service, as Gallager has done nothing and can't prove they have done anything, so I think I should just cut my losses and get this straightened out by a competent insurance company before I face legal problems for driving without insurance.
